A few days after federal agents conducted an immigration crackdown in Manhattan, New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani posted a video on social media on Sunday outlining immigrants’ right to refuse to speak or follow orders from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, according to the AP.
“We can all stand up to ICE if you know your rights,” Mamdani stated in the video, promising to defend the 3 million immigrants who live in New York City. According to the recently elected mayor of New York City, Americans have the option to refuse to interact with federal immigration officers, film them without interfering, and turn down their demands to access private areas. You have the right to keep quiet, but ICE is legally permitted to lie to you. In the video, Mamdani stated, “If you’re being detained, you may always ask, ‘Am I free to go? until they answer you.
Last weekend, ICE attempted to raid Canal Street and detain our immigrant neighbours, Mamdani said in reference to the ICE raid that occurred on Canal Street. I will defend the rights of every New Yorker in my capacity as mayor. And that includes the over 3 million immigrants that live in this metropolis.
