A wealthy investor interested in purchasing TikTok’s US business told the BBC that he has been left in the dark as the current deadline for the app’s sale approaches. The United States has repeatedly extended the deadline for Bytedance, the platform’s Chinese owner, to sell or block American customers. On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump looks to be preparing to extend the deadline for the fifth time.
We’re merely sitting by and waiting to see what transpires,” investor Frank McCourt told BBC News. But if the opportunity arises, we’re ready to go… we’ve raised the funds to buy it – we’ll see. The popular short-form video app was set to be banned or distributed in the United States in January, under a bill passed by Congress in 2024.
At the time, lawmakers warned that ByteDance’s ties to the Chinese government harmed national security, and they were concerned that Beijing might force the company to pass over data on US users. TikTok and its owners have consistently denied that this is a legitimate concern. President Joe Biden signed the law while in office, and the Supreme Court upheld it in early 2025.
