According to his vice president, JD Vance, US President Donald Trump is thinking of giving Ukraine Tomahawk missiles. Vance stated on “Fox News Sunday” that “we are having conversations this very minute about that issue” and that Trump will make a “final determination.”
On the same day, Trump’s envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, expressed his belief that Ukraine was authorized to launch a deep attack into Russia. “Make use of your ability to strike deeply,” he said. “Sanctuaries do not exist.” Later, Kellogg stressed that his comments were not a new understanding of White House thinking, but rather a reference to public remarks made by Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. However, Trump’s team is either genuinely considering providing Tomahawks.
Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, was entering The Beast in Alaska on a red carpet forty-three days ago. However, the prospect of the United States’ most potent long-range missile being given to an adversary that Trump claimed “had no cards” just seven months ago has forced the Kremlin to react. This is yet another policy reversal, but one with long-term consequences, following Trump’s Truth Social tweet that Ukraine may reclaim all occupied territory.
