On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not the Republican leader, had decided that Israel should attack Qatar. He also stated that a unilateral assault on Qatar is not in the interests of the United States or Israel.
Israel’s military operations in the Middle East escalated Tuesday as it sought to murder Hamas senior officials in Qatar with an airstrike. Many in the Middle East and abroad denounced the strike as an action that may worsen already tense conditions in the area. Trump said he ordered U.S. ambassador Steve Witkoff to alert Qatar to the impending attack but that it was too late to stop it.
Israel and America’s objectives are not furthered by unilaterally bombing within Qatar, a sovereign nation and close friend of the United States that is courageously and diligently taking risks with us to broker peace,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Hamas claimed that the Israeli strike in Doha killed five of its members, including the son of Khalil al-Hayya, the group’s exiled Gaza leader.
Qatar is one of Washington’s most powerful Gulf allies. Qatar has acted as a mediator in attempts to reach an agreement for the release of Israeli captives held by Hamas, a truce between Israel and the Palestinian terrorist organization in Gaza, and a post-conflict Gaza plan.
