As the world’s two largest economies continue their trade battle, Chinese authorities are urging US President Donald Trump to “completely cancel” his so-called reciprocal tariffs. Last week, Trump raised taxes on Chinese goods to 145% while announcing a 90-day halt to a number of his planned worldwide penalties.
China’s trade ministry issued a statement saying, “We urge the US to take a big step to correct its mistakes, completely cancel the wrong practice of’reciprocal tariffs’ and return to the right path of mutual respect.
According to the Chinese trade ministry, Beijing was “evaluating the impact” of the decision, which referred to the exclusions as a “small step” by the US.
Trump’s technological exclusions, which include semiconductors, computers, and smartphones, gave consumers and tech companies comfort that the tariffs wouldn’t cause the cost of devices to increase.
During an interview on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday, US trade representative Jamieson Greer was asked if Trump has any intentions to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. We don’t currently have any plans for it,” he stated. Beginning in early April, Trump levied a 54% tax on Chinese goods imports, which he later raised to the current 145% rate.
