Before an annual meeting between the two nations, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India for a two-day visit and was greeted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the visit, which takes place months after the US intensified pressure on India to cease purchasing Russian oil, Delhi and Moscow are anticipated to sign many agreements.
In an effort to put an end to the conflict, US President Donald Trump’s administration is also holding several negotiations with Russia and Ukraine. Putin and Modi have a cordial connection, and India and Russia have been strong partners for many years. Here’s what to look out for when they meet and why they both need each other.
India has been purchasing substantial amounts of crude oil from Russia, making it the world’s third-largest importer. It wasn’t always that way. Only 2.5% of India’s oil imports came from Russia before to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Kremlin. As India exploited Russian price reductions brought on by sanctions against Moscow and Russia’s limited access to the European market, that percentage shot up to 35%.
During the Soviet era, selling weaponry to India has been a top goal for Moscow. There were rumours that India intended to buy cutting-edge Russian fighter jets and air defence systems before Putin’s visit.
