The Ghent Festival’s decision to cancel an Israeli conductor’s performance due to his purported views on the Israeli government has been deemed incorrect and alarming by an EU Commissioner and the executive.
The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance at the Ghent Festival next week was canceled due to unclear circumstances surrounding its Israeli conductor Lahav Shani’s stance toward the Israeli government.
The concert’s cancellation and the consequences it entails gravely worry us,” a Commission spokeswoman told Euronews. It is against our core and democratic values to bar people from concert halls or stages unless they incite hatred and violence.” The representative went on to say that artists shouldn’t be evaluated according to their place of birth, political allegiance, or religion.
