Russia has increased its attacks on the Odesa region of southern Ukraine, endangering the naval infrastructure in the area and creating extensive power outages. Oleksiy Kuleba, the deputy prime minister of Ukraine, claimed that Moscow was attacking the area in a “systematic” manner. He issued a warning that the war’s aim “may have shifted towards Odesa” last week.
According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Moscow is attempting to prevent Ukraine from accessing maritime logistics through the repeated strikes. In response to drone assaults on Russian “shadow fleet” ships in the Black Sea earlier in December, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to cut off Ukraine’s maritime access.
The phrase “shadow fleet” describes the hundreds of tankers that Russia utilized to get under Western sanctions following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to the regional governor, strikes damaged a civilian vessel in Odesa’s port infrastructure on Monday night.
It was the most recent of hundreds of strikes that have caused numerous casualties and interfered with the region’s power supplies for days on end. Strikes caused a fire at a major port on Sunday night, destroying dozens of containers of vegetable oil and grain, and shut off electricity for 120,000 people.
