Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, was convicted of planning a military takeover and given a sentence of 27 years and three months in jail. Hours after convicting the former leader, a five-judge Supreme Court panel imposed the punishment.
After he lost the 2022 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a left-wing opponent, they found him guilty of orchestrating a plot to maintain him in power. One justice voted to acquit him, while the other four found him guilty. The punishment was described as “absurdly excessive” by Bolsonaro’s attorneys, who also promised to launch “the appropriate appeals.
He was also prohibited from seeking public office until 2033 by the Supreme Court panel. Bolsonaro did not physically attend this last round of the trial since he was placed under house arrest after being considered a flight risk.
However, he has previously stated that it was intended to keep him from running for president in 2026, although he had already been disqualified from public office on other grounds. He has referred to it as a “witch hunt” as well.
US President Donald Trump had already repeated his remarks by imposing 50% tariffs on Brazilian exports, which he justified as revenge for Bolsonaro’s prosecution. Trump responded to the guilty decision by calling it “very surprising” and drawing comparisons to his own life.
