As the government shutdown approaches its third week, the Trump administration is searching for other ways to guarantee that federal law enforcement officers receive their salaries. Government officials are looking into alternate ways to fund some important programs, such as a food program for women and children, because Democrats and Republicans are at a standstill over the closure.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has ordered that US military personnel be paid with money that was originally allotted to the Pentagon. Vice President JD Vance has already warned of more painful” layoffs if the closure continues, and thousands of federal employees have already been let go.
In a 49-45 vote on Tuesday, the Senate failed to move Republicans’ stopgap budget forward despite voting for the eighth time to finance the government.
The amount of money required to guarantee the payment of all federal law enforcement officers is unknown. A representative for the Office of Management and Budget, or OMB, acknowledged that it is looking into other options to guarantee that such payments continue in response to a question from the BBC. Federal law enforcement officers are expected to report for duty, even if they are not paid, because they are deemed necessary, much like military soldiers.
