On Sunday, Cyprus shared its main goals for its upcoming European Union presidency. The country has committed to support an “autonomous Union open to the world” as it prepares to assume the rotating role starting 1 January.
President Nicos Christodoulides introduced the plan at an event in Pano Lefkara. He described five main areas that will guide Cyprus during its six months as president of the Council of the European Union.
In 10 days, we take on an important role and responsibility for Europe, our fellow citizens, and our children,” Christodoulides said. “Cyprus is ready to lead and to be the voice of the 27 member states for six months.
This presidency begins at a crucial time for the EU. Russia’s war in Ukraine continues, and Europe faces what Christodoulides called “intense geopolitical challenges” that test the bloc’s strength, unity, and cohesion.
Cyprus plans to back key defence initiatives and push for quick action on the White Paper on European Defence and the Defence Preparedness Roadmap for 2030. The presidency also sees stronger transatlantic ties and Euro-NATO cooperation as vital for European security. Cyprus will focus on keeping maritime routes safe and open and will implement the EU Maritime Safety Strategy, Christodoulides said.
The presidency sees migration management as a primary security concern. “The Cyprus presidency will promote as a key priority the full implementation of the Pact on Immigration and Asylum and will promote the strengthening of the return system,” Christodoulides said.
