China slammed the UK government on Wednesday for the latest delay in determining whether to permit the construction of a massive new embassy in London. Following rising security concerns, British officials said on Tuesday that a decision scheduled for December 10th would be moved back to January 20th.
The UK’s repeated delay in providing approval is completely unjustified, and the reasons they cited are untenable,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated. The projected facility at Royal Mint Court, near the Tower of London, would be Europe’s largest embassy, measuring 20,000 square meters.
Critics have expressed fear that the building will be used as an espionage base, and MPs from all political parties have asked the administration to reject the idea. The UK government’s planning office announced that the decision has been postponed to give additional time to evaluate it.
“The Home Office and Foreign Office have offered views on specific security implications, and have been clear all along that a decision should not be made until we confirm that those considerations have been completed or resolved,” Tom Wells, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer, stated on Tuesday.
