Meg O’Neill is the first female CEO of a major international oil company, having been chosen by BP.
Less than two years after replacing Bernard Looney, who was found to have engaged in “serious misconduct” by failing to disclose ties with coworkers, the London-based energy company announced that its new boss, Murray Auchincloss, would resign.
Until Ms. O’Neill, who has managed Australian energy company Woodside Energy since 2021, assumes her new position on April 1, BP senior vice president Carol Howle will act as interim CEO.According to Ms. O’Neill, she is eager to assist BP in “doing our part to meet the world’s energy needs. Mr. Auchincloss, who succeeded Mr. Looney in September 2024, stated that he had expressed his willingness to resign “were an appropriate leader identified” to BP’s chairman in September.
He stated, “I am confident that BP is now well positioned for significant growth and I look forward to watching the company’s future progress,” following the announcement of Ms. O’Neill’s appointment. Up until December 2026, he will act as an advisor. Ms. O’Neill stated that reestablishing the oil giant’s market leadership, promoting safety, and fostering innovation and sustainability will be her top priorities.
